Washington Park Hotel
South Beach, Miami
Playful, $ (from $90)

Let's hear it for hotels that wear their heart on their sleeves. Or on their doorsteps, so to speak. The letters the Miami hotel WHP may officially stand for "Washington Park Hotel," but spiritually they seem to prefer "Where Play Happens."

Well, it's South Beach. It's not like you came here for a silent retreat.

If you did come for what this neighborhood does best, you'll find it in the hotel complex, four landmarked 1943 Art Deco buildings that occupy a city block and are connected via plant-filled walkways and gardens. Four separate lobbies make for lots of social spaces, as does the courtyard, where you can play ping-pong, life-sized Jenga, and bocce. More fun? Okay, okay: Go play arcade games in the Davis building. Feeling lazy? Grab a lounger by the small but sweet pool or claim one of the hammocks. As for what lies beyond the complex, the beach is two blocks away, and Lincoln Road and SoFi are a half mile in either direction.

At a Glance

The Vibe: Playful and beachy.

Standout Detail: The exuberant attitude that permeates throughout.

This Place Is Perfect For: Young (and young at heart) travelers who want an Instagram-ready social scene.

Rooms: 181 rooms spread over four buildings range in size and category. Standard, premium, loft, and premiere rooms have two queen or one king-sized beds; the premiere king terrace suite is a single bed. The décor is simple and clean, with neutral gray tones and pops of color in accessories like pillows and vases and the patio chairs. Amenities include Beekman 1802 bath products, a Starbucks coffee maker, and big flat screen TVs. This is great value, given that rooms start at $90.

On Site: In addition to the pool area and the game-filled courtyard, the hotel has a fitness center with free weights, weight machines, treadmills, ellipticals, and more. Hotel guests can take free classes at Glow Hot Yoga Miami Beach — on-site on Tuesdays and daily at their studio. Meeting facilities are also available if you need to weave some work into all this play.

The beach is only two blocks away, and if you can’t bear to walk, you can borrow one of the hotel’s Martone bikes or hop a ride on the hotel’s tuk-tuk.

The art is a thing here: The photographs you see in the lobbies and rooms were commissioned by four photographers with huge social media following who each captured their vision of Miami.

Food + Drink: The hotel is between food and beverage offerings and only offers breakfast to guests. (WPH was home to the local outpost of the trailblazing cocktail bar Employees Only, but it’s now closed.) There are numerous options within walking distance, as you'll read in a second.

What to Do Nearby

So much! We never come to Miami without having at least one prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich at the counter at La Sandwicherie, which is conveniently open 24 hours (and is the best hangover prevention and cure). Have Cuban at Puerto Sagua and Southern at Yardbird. Go for drinks at Sweet Liberty, The Abbey, and Broken Shaker. Spend too much money on designer clothes at The Webster. And get a shot of culture at Bass Museum of Art.
