Omni La Costa Resort & Spa has had 60 years to figure out the Southern California resort life. Mission accomplished, and then some. Set across 400 acres in the coastal foothills of Carlsbad, a short drive from the Pacific, the Spanish Mission-style resort opened in 1965 as a glamorous playground for Hollywood types and athletes. These days, the cast is broader — golfers, spa goers, couples, kids, grandparents — but the idea remains pretty much the same: Come here, settle in, and find plenty of reasons not to leave.

"Plenty" being the operative word. La Costa has two championship golf courses, a serious spa, tennis and pickleball, an athletic club, gardens, multiple pools, waterslides, a kids club with childcare, and enough restaurants and bars to prevent resort fatigue. Yet for all that activity, it doesn't feel like a theme park. Original hand-painted tiles, wrought ironwork, and Spanish architecture give the place history and character, while a recent multimillion-dollar renovation brought a lighter, more coastal look to more than 500 guest rooms, suites, and villas.

Golfers have especially good reason to pay attention: Gil Hanse redesigned the North Course, now host of the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships through 2028. Wellness has equally deep roots here. The Spa at La Costa, been part of the resort since 1965, was thoroughly reimagined in 2024. Which means one person can spend the morning chasing a lower handicap while another disappears into a salt room, and everyone can meet for a cocktail later. A well-rounded vacation indeed.

Rooms: More than 500 renovated rooms, suites, and villas pair light-filled interiors and soft coastal textures with details inspired by the resort’s Spanish architecture. Options range from 425-square-foot resort rooms to family suites that can sleep seven and residential-style one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas. Views take in gardens, pools, and golf courses.

Food + Drink: VUE overlooks the golf courses and serves Baja-inspired California fare on its outdoor patio. Bob’s Steak & Chop House is the place for prime steaks, chops, and seafood; Bar Traza handles Spanish-inspired shared plates and cocktails. Marketplace and poolside cafés cover the casual end of the spectrum, while the Spa Café puts herbs from the spa garden to work on its health-minded menu.

On Site: The 43,000-square-foot Spa at La Costa emerged from a major 2024 refresh with new salt rooms, aromatherapy steam rooms, Vichy showers, and updated treatment spaces. The Athletic Club offers fitness classes and personal training, and tennis and pickleball courts keep the racket crowd busy. Families can make a day of Splash Landing, with its water play zone and three slides, or take advantage of the kids club and childcare. Meanwhile, EDGE gives the 21-and-over crowd an escape of its own, with infinity-edge hot tubs, fire pits, cocktails, and golf-course views.

Golf deserves its own paragraph here: 36 holes are spread across two championship courses. Gil Hanse redesigned the North Course, a links-style layout stretching up to 7,500 yards and host of the NCAA Division I Golf Championships through 2028. The South Course takes a more traditional parkland approach, with mature trees, narrow fairways, and an emphasis on accuracy.

What to Do Nearby

Eventually, you may want to leave. Carlsbad’s beaches and coastal lagoons are a short drive west for swimming, paddle boarding, and other water activities. LEGOLAND California makes an easy family outing, while Encinitas supplies beach-town wandering and yoga. San Diego Zoo Safari Park and greater San Diego are also within easy reach.
