Take a Peek Inside Portland’s Coolest New Hotel
The Hoxton, Portland
Portland, Oregon
Trendy, $ (From $85)
At The Hoxton, Portland, it’s all about bringing the outside in. Located in an iconic building that dates back to 1906, the city’s newest hotel is both affordably priced and welcoming. The plant-filled lobby lounge, with its cozy velvet couches and stacks of design books, is the kind of place you could happily spend an idle weekend afternoon or set up shop for a productive workday. Designed as a sort of open house for the neighborhood, locals and guests are encouraged to hang out in various WiFi-supported common spaces. In the guest rooms, an initiative called Hox Friends connects the two through a selection of ten hand-picked books curated by small business owners, artists, and residents from the neighborhood. “Shoebox” rooms start at a mere $85 per night, making this one of the best deals in the city.

What to Do Nearby
A central location in Old Town Chinatown makes it easy to get just about anywhere in Portland. Start with a stroll along the waterfront, where the Portland Saturday Market (one of the largest in the U.S.) sets up shop over the weekend. Make your way back towards the hotel with stops at two local institutions, Voodoo Doughnuts and Stumptown Coffee — and don't be surprised if you find yourself going back for seconds. Walk ten minutes inland to get lost in the stacks at Powell’s Books, the largest used and new bookstore in the world. If you are up for even more walking, 45 minutes further west will have you at Portland Japanese Garden, a 12-acre oasis that was once described as the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside Japan.
