Updated 12/18/19

Just because it's the end of the year doesn't mean you have to stop your travel planning. In fact, don't you want a break from holiday shopping? Instead of thinking about the presents you have to ship, think about sending yourself around the world in 2019.

Palm Beach: Kicking yourself for not having booked a holiday getaway? Your procrastination may pay off: Eau Palm Beach is running a Festive Resort Credit, with $400 or $600 resort credits for stays of 5 or 7 days between December 20 and January 1, 2019.

Fathom founder Pavia Rosati stayed here last month and absolutely loved it.

Detroit: Be the first to stay at the hotly-awaited Shinola Hotel when they open on January 2, with rates as low as $195. Detroit is on the up and up!

Nicaragua: Yemaya Island Hideaway has just reopened on Little Corn Island and has three tiers of pricing with varying services, from $95 to $200 per night for two.

Jackson Hole: If you'd rather ski than sun, Anvil Hotel in downtown Jackson is offering 25% off pre-paid visits. (Pavia also stayed here and loved it, too.)

New Orleans: NOLA is always a good time, especially if you're saving money at hotels we love, like The Troubadour, Ace Hotel, The Old No. 77 Hotel, and Ritz-Carlton, and Roosevelt New Orleans, a Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Where We’ve Been

I spent a long weekend in Austin, Texas, where I had the chance to interview punk hotelier Liz Lambert (Hotel St. Cecilia, Hotel San Jose) at her new restaurant, Joann’s (named after her mom: the logo is her signature red lipstick kiss), which is attached to the Austin Motel and is mucho cute. My daughter loved spending time at the motel’s Bodega, which sells old-school toys along with new-school prints, gifts, and snacks, and has a big couch inviting you to stay a while. I also had a chance to get to know The Carpenter Hotel, which is brand new, sunny, spacious, great-looking, and has a very nice little to-go coffee counter serving cinnamon buns and migas and other things that will destroy any hope of eating well for the day by about, oh, 9 in the morning. If you are heading that way, be sure to eat at Fiore Tedesco’s terrific and tucked-away Italian restaurant L’Oca d’Oro, which has a great soundtrack and outlandish handmade pasta. – Jeralyn

I spent this past weekend in Charleston with the lovely Garden & Gun team, soaking up all the Southern charm and celebrating their annual Made in the South Awards. Along with a series of fireside chats with Southern tastemakers like Hampden’s Stacy Smallwood and local restaurateur Brooks Reitz, my favorite part of the event-filled weekend was an al fresco dinner by Southern chef Asha Gomez celebrating the award winners at the historic Aiken-Rhett House. I had the good fortune of staying at not one but two hotels I've been dying to see — The Dewberry and Zero George — and loved both. Also on my agenda: eating the best fried chicken at Husk, touring the Southern Style Now Showhouse, shopping at Wynsum Antiques & Interiors, and taking several leisurely walks around the always photogenic historic district. – Berit, senior editor

While in Los Angeles, I split my stay between east and west, devoting most of my time to finding and eating super-fresh produce and drinking beverages with adaptogens and coconut butter. But I detoured with a croissant at an event at Heather Taylor’s beautiful pop-up home decor shop in Westwood. And ate at the most Venice-y restaurant in Venice, MTN, a Cali-Japanese gastropub from the Gjelina/Gjusta people. While staying in Los Feliz, I had breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drink breaks at Botanica, which is the kind of communal cafe/market/restaurant I wish was in walking distance of my Brooklyn apartment. A healthy, sustainable, nicely packaged meal-to-go from Honey Hi was the best thing about the plane ride home. –Jeralyn

I just got back from Savannah and am happy to report that new things are happening in this charming old Southern town. Savannah Food and Wine Festival, hosted in an old rail yard, was the big draw the weekend I visited, but I was in town to check out The Alida Hotel, a new boutique in the slowly up-and-coming River Street district. Dressed to the nines by NYC design firm Parts and Labor, the hotel far exceeded my expectations. Also new in town: The Grey Market, a new counter service joint with an excellent breakfast menu from Mashama Bailey, of recent Chef’s Table acclaim, who runs The Grey a few blocks away. This being Savannah, the classics do nothing but shine: breakfast at Collins Quarter, drinks at Artillery, dinner at Husk, a ghost tour, a walk through the town’s 24 squares, and ice cream at Leopold’s. – Daniel

Palihotel Seattle is now open for business in the heart of downtown Seattle, just steps from Pike Place Market. This is Palisociety's first hotel outside Los Angeles.

Come January, the Japanese hospitality company Hoshinoya Resorts will open their second international hotel, Hoshinoya Guguan, in Taichung City, Taiwan.

This July will mark the opening of Natural Selection’s latest hotel, a tree-house styled luxury tented lodge called Tuludi in Botswana’s Okavango Delta (one of the most iconic wildlife destinations on Earth).

Here's a happy switch: good news about coral reefs! Six Senses Zil Pasyon in the Seychelles has successfully transplanted coral from its coral nursery into the Indian Ocean. Let's hope we can report on more and more of these.

Where We've Been

I just returned from a magical week in Kennebunkport, Maine, where I got married and finally had the perfect occasion to check into Grace White Barn Inn and Spa. I've been driving past the historic 26-room inn for over a decade and am happy to report that the service more than lived up to my expectations. I'm looking forward to celebrating many future anniversaries in the hotel's award-winning restaurant. – Berit, senior editor

I went hiking up Storm King Mountain in New York's Hudson Valley over the weekend with Discover Outdoors, an adventure outfit offering everything from guided day trips to multi-day camping excursions to city dwellers (read: me) across the U.S. The weather was cold and rainy, but our guide was a burst of sunshine. I was on a backwoods navigation hike, and though we stuck to the trail, I did learn how to properly use a map and compass, which, as a travel guy, almost seems like a requirement. (Spoiler alert: It involves math.) – Daniel, editor

How has andBeyond upped the ante on their already incredible safari experience? By doing a total refurbishment of their single-use and ultra-exclusive Phinda Homestead in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal Province. Your totally personalized safari experience includes a dedicated ranger and tracker team, plus charming local details in the decor.

When Angad Arts Hotel opens on November in St. Louis, Missouri, it will be the city's first boutique hotel. But that's not the only thing they're touting. It's the only hotel in the world that lets guests choose rooms based on color: green for rejuvenation, blue for tranquility, yellow for happiness. The color theme will carry into such details as the rubber duckies in the bathrooms.

Just when we thought New Orleans' boutique hotel boom was slowing down, we heard about The Cosair, a pool club, hotel, restaurant, and bar opening on Saint Charles Avenue this spring. With restaurateur Robert LeBlanc, hospitality pro Hugh Daschbach, and designer Sara Costello at the helm, we're expecting very good things. (No website yet.)

While we’re on the topic of new boutique hotels in New Orleans, take a look at this video series from Hotel Peter and Paul, a former church, rectory, schoolhouse, and convent that will open as a boutique hotel in the Marigny neighborhood later this month.

The folks behind Charleston’s uber charming Zero George have a new, yet-to-be-named project in the works. Located in the lush hills of Virginia hunt country, the former Blackthorne Inn is being converting into a boutique hotel with luxurious, rustic accommodations and cabins, fine dining, and wine.

Where We've Been

I just returned from a week-long stay in Aarhus, the European Capital of Culture 2017, and can’t say enough good things about the Danish port city. It's clean and tidy with charming cobblestone streets, modern architecture, a thriving food scene, and easy access to the countryside. Highlights included Olafur Eliasson's striking Rainbow Panorama at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, The Infinite Bridge, a gourmet feast at Ghrelin in the new Aarhus Ø quarter, and an early morning open-run with the city’s mayor — something he does every other Wednesday. - Berit

UK mini-chain The Hoxton has opened its first U.S. outpost in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The stylish 175-room boutique hotel has three restaurants, including Summerly, an open-air rooftop joint with unbeatable views of the Manhattan skyline.

We have our eye on a new-to-us Hudson Valley estate-turned hotel called The Dutchess. Without a social media presence or robust website, we can only know so much, which makes us even more curious to go check it out.

Where We’ve Been

I just returned from an idyllic stay at Nebo Lodge, a charming nine-room inn and restaurant on North Haven, one of the fifteen remaining year-round islands off the coast of Maine. We biked the island's perimeter, stopping for homemade corn chowder at Turner Farms, spent an afternoon on the beach at Mullins Head Park, and hitched a ride to neighboring Vinalhaven island to check out the French antique linens at Marston House. — Berit, senior editor

I spent the week on the other side of the continent in Alberta, Canada. And I have to say, cool things are happening up north. Calgary and Edmonton, the province's two major cities, are seeing something of a cultural revival thanks to an influx of capital from oil magnates looking to diversify their portfolios following the great oil crash of 2014. Restaurants, bars, shops, and residential and commercial developments are popping up like crazy. In Calgary, the more executive of the two towns, the action is in Victoria Park, where you’re just as likely to find a hip and hidden Chinese-inspired speakeasy (The Tea House) as you are one of Canada’s best cocktail bars (Proof). Edmonton is the blue collar town where nature (the river valley that cuts through town is 22 times the size of Central Park), live music, and excellent dining (don't miss Bündok, Clementine, or Rge Rd) reign supreme. - Daniel, editor

Chicago was never high on my hit list (as a New Yorker, why visit another big American city?), but that's changed after spending a few days there. My home base was on the Gold Coast, at Thompson Chicago and then The Talbott. But like any good local would instruct, I made my way out to Chicago’s many neighborhoods. West Loop is happening right now, complete with tons of great restaurants, an Ace Hotel, and a Google campus. Wicker Park, specifically Big Star and Violet Hour, is where I would drink every weekend if I lived in Chicago. Logan Square, where I got breakfast one day at Cellar Door Provisions, is a neighborhood I’m dedicating time to when I’m next in the city. – Daniel

This New Jersey girl just came back from a beautiful wedding on old Jersey, the charming Channel Island closer to France than England. Our lovely hotel, St. Brelade's Bay, overlooked a bay of the same name that sees the second most dramatic tides in the world, after Korea and Japan. Or so I'm told, though what I saw certainly bears witness to it. My best discovery was Jersey oysters, which I ate by the dozens at Oyster Box restaurant down the road. We went on cliff walks, scored at the local antique fair, and generally relaxed in a serene island I'd love to go back to. — Pavia, CEO

From Jersey, we flew to Scotland, which has topped my must-go list for a few decades. Needless to say, I had high expectations. What I wasn't expecting was that much rain, though I sure did appreciate the daily rainbows. Highlights were the Isle of Mull, where we stayed with a friend who hand-dives for scallops for his Ethical Shellfish Company, the drive along Loch Lomond, Monachyle Mhor hotel and restaurant, and Edinburgh, where the festival was in seriously full swing. The best shows we saw starred The Pin comedy duo and the bendy troupe of Circus Abyssinia. — Pavia

I'm just back from a family-and-friends vacation at The Suttle Lodge, a rustic resort on Suttle Lake in Oregon's Deschutes National Forest. It was picturesque and laid-back and perfect for our intergenerational group. We hiked among tall pines, dipped into freezing cold waterfalls, jumped in the lake, paddled canoes, roasted marshmallows, and tried to be barefoot as much as possible. — Jeralyn, editorial director

Where We've Been

DOWNTOWN NEW YORK CITY
Last week I popped over to Governor's Island to check out Collective Retreat's newest outpost on my lunch break. The Scandi-style glamping oasis is only an eight-minute ferry ride from a pier in New York City's Financial District, but it feels worlds away. Along with two different tent types (the nicer of which has en-suite bathrooms and king-sized beds), there's a fire pit for roasting s'mores, a restaurant serving hearty Italian dishes, and postcard-perfect views of the Statue of Liberty. Rates start at $199 per night. – Berit, senior editor

This week Team Fathom toured Mr. C Seaport, the newest hotel in NYC's revitalized Seaport District. The elegant 66-room hotel with great views of the East River is Cipriani's first on the east coast; a second is slated to open this winter in Coconut Grove, Florida. Next door is Bellini, the Italian restaurant named for the Cip's iconic cocktail.– Berit

MADRID
I just returned from a week in Madrid, land of siestas and an endless sea of tapas bars. I had been warned that the city empties out in the summer, with Madrileños eschewing the capital for coastal cities and the Balearics, but I found the city buzzing with an ineffable energy at all hours of the day. Where else would you find restaurants swarming with diners at 1 a.m? I stayed at the newly-renovated AC Hotel Cuzco, a sleek, modern business hotel with an eye for design and quite possibly the world's greatest breakfast buffet spread, which fueled my endless search for the most colorful streets and best jamón ibérico in town. - Rachel, editorial assistant

ASBURY PARK
I spent one of the hottest days of the summer on the shores of Asbury Park, the Jersey Shore town that’s now on many a New Yorker’s radar. The scene has been up-and-coming for a while — some will say it’s already there — and is a swarm of live music, alternative shops, tasty restaurants, and good nightlife. I made a night out of it at Asbury Park Distilling Co., where a short (required) tour preceded well-mixed cocktails; Asbury Lanes, a recently refurbished old-school bowling alley and performance venue; and Lil Buddy, a speakeasy entered through a parking lot that’s known for its tiki drinks. The next morning, I recovered with a pork roll (when in Jersey...) from breakfast institution Frank’s Deli & Restaurant and, after a walk around town, a breakfast burrito with more pork roll and iced coffee from cute-as-hell Cardinal Provisions. When I wasn’t soaking up the A/C and the people watching at The Asbury hotel, I was on beach taking in the sights and sounds of the Jersey Shore. – Daniel, editor

BIG SUR
I finally made it to Esalen Institute, a famed hippie compound on a wild stretch of California coastline. The Institute is a non-profit retreat center and intentional community — a place for people to work the land for their lunch, explore the dark corners of themselves and, maybe, howl at the full moon (welcome to California). It's been a happenin' spot since the '60s, when Hunter S. Thompson roamed the wooded grounds, Joan Baez worked in the quinoa-and-kale-loving cafeteria, and Don Draper found everlasting inner peace and a gazillion-dollar ad idea. The sprawling grounds have simple accommodations, yurts for meditation and yoga, sitting areas for self-reflection, and rustic outdoor baths open 24/7 and perched on a cliff over the Pacific Ocean. – Jeralyn, editorial director

Pendry Hotels announced its plans to turn Natirar, the grand, Tudor-style mansion formerly owned by the late King of Morocco, into a stunning New Jersey country estate.

We have our eyes on a newcomer to the already impressive luxury lodge scene in Montana. Sage Lodge just opened along the banks of the Yellowstone River in Paradise Valley. Cue the vast horizons, the rugged outdoor activities, the swank rooms and cabins, and the big skies.

Kettner's Townhouse in London's Soho is the latest from the Soho House group. Open to everyone, including non-members, the charming 33-room hotel, restaurant, and bar are filled with lovely period details like William Morris wallpapers, a restored 18th-century staircase, and art deco and art nouveau furniture. The biggest bragging rights come from booking the Jacobean Suite, which was once Oscar Wilde's private dining room.

Atelier Ace is opening another hotel in New Orleans in collaboration with LA-based Studio Shamshiri. Maison de la Luz, an elevated 67-room guest house with a library bar and curated concierge service, will open next spring in the city's Warehouse District.

Where We've Been

NORTH FORK, NEW YORK
Team Fathom kicked off Memorial Day weekend with an overnight at Sound View, the newly renovated former motel in Greenport. We couldn't get enough of the views, the sunshine, the sofas, and the coffee in the main lobby area — hats off to Studio Tack for a really well crafted space. Other cute places we liked in town included Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market, Barba Bianca, antiques at Beall & Bell, and the always amazing sandwiches at The North Fork Food Truck.

LOS ANGELES
Last weekend I checked into the ultra glamorous Hotel Bel-Air, a picturesque escape spread across twelve acres of serene gardens with a cute flock of swans, pale pink bungalows and a swimming pool kept at the idyllic temperature of 82 degrees. The entire stay felt like a treat, but my favorite part was the heavily scented air, fragrant with fresh gardenia and jasmine. - Berit, senior editor

LONDON
I booked a quick, last-minute trip to London last weekend and flew the new budget airline Primera. The cons: The tedious check-in process. (I had no luggage; they had no automated ticketing kiosks.) You have to pay for everything on board, including water. There's no in-flight entertainment, and the seat had USB power only one one leg of the trip. The pros: It was a brand new plane with friendly staff. And the biggie: The fare was $800 when the majors were charging $1800. When I was in London, I toured South Place Hotel, a stylish hotel in the City (look for a full article soon), and Kettner's Townhouse, the lovely open-to-everyone Soho House hotel around the corner from their flagship club in Soho. I had two fantastic meals: dinner at Odette's in Primrose Hill and Sunday roast before the flight home at The Quality Chop House in Clerkenwell. Neither restaurant is new, and both were better than ever. - Pavia, CEO

QUOGUE, NEW YORK
I recently had the chance to spend a weekend in the Hamptons the way I imagine it should be spent — in a spectacularly designed, glamorous home with its own pool, hot tub, and daybeds. The house was in Quogue, the sleepy town east of Westhampton, and is managed by ThirdHome, an exclusive homestay program with a collection of insane second homes around the world. Once you qualify as a member, you can either rent your own second home in exchange for keys, which are used to book nights at other properties at a significant discount, or, for those without second homes, rent their accommodations the old-fashioned way. It's a cool service for those looking for an upgrade from Airbnb, especially if you’re lucky enough to have a beautiful second house just lying around. – Daniel, editor

PORTLAND, MAINE
On a recent trip to Maine, I discovered that the quaint port city of Portland — and specifically the quirky West End neighborhood — is home to cozy restaurants, cool bars (with perfectly distilled spirits and locally brewed beer), and one-of-a-kind indie shops. I stayed at The Francis, a family-run B&B-style hotel nearby, and totally felt like a local. - Delfina, editorial assistant

SOUTH WALTON, FLORIDA
I recently returned from a week in South Walton, an area of sixteen planned beach towns on Florida’s Emerald Coast. Each is unique in design, from the all-white stucco homes of Alys Beach to the pan-Caribbean vibes of Rosemary Beach, which makes for an impossibly charming hodgepodge of small communities. First-time visitors to the Panhandle (like myself) will quickly realize that the Gulf Coast of Florida has a distinctly different feel than the more popular tourist destinations to the south. South Walton is closer to Nashville and New Orleans than it is to Miami, and you can tell: I even heard it referred to as the Redneck Hamptons — a place where gorgeous beaches and great shopping meets good ol’ fashioned Southern hospitality, crayfish, and po’ boys. I stayed in Rosemary Beach at one of the area’s few boutique properties, The Pearl, a charming hotel with distinctive turrets and striped awnings in the center of town, steps away from a private beach. It was a perfect home base. - Rachel, editorial assistant

Where We've Been

I find it funny that on my first trip to Greece, I visited a total of zero islands. But I must say, I was kept pleasantly occupied (and well fed) on the mainland. I started with a few days in Athens, staying nowhere remarkable but spending my time in the city’s hippest neighborhoods. Bel Ray in Koukai, Hotel Chelsea in Pangrati, and The Clumsies and Odori in the city center were all standouts. Heading north to Volos, in the shadow of the mythic Mount Pelion (where the centaurs were believed to live), I learned about the Greek version of meze, which is heavily influenced by culinary traditions of Greeks from Turkey who emigrated to this area in the last century. Here’s how it works: You get one small plate with every round of tsipouro (a grape distillate) you order, ensuring that after eight rounds of the hard stuff, you’re not stumbling home. Capping off our foray into the mainland was Meteora, a series of massive boulder-like rock formations into which monasteries were carved. As the name implies, they truly look like they were dropped from the sky. – Daniel, editor

Heckfield Place, the idyllic 18th-century Georgian country estate in Heckfield, Hampshire, England, has opened its doors. With elegant, understated interiors by up-and-coming designer Ben Thompson (who previously worked with Ilse Crawford) and general manager Olivia Richli (who we first met when she hosted Pavia at Amangalla in Sri Lanka a decade ago) at the helm, we’re predicting good things from this new hotel.

This summer, the upscale vacation rental company One Fine Stay is expanding into Australia and New Zealand, along with Greece, where its first resort, a collection of ten villas overlooking a secluded bay in Mykonos, will open.

The folks behind Habitas Tulum are opening two stylish clubhouses, one in a former New York City firehouse and the other in a former home and sex therapist office on Abbott Kinney in Los Angeles.

Not that anyone needs a reason to go to Marrakech and the impossibly sumptuous Royal Mansour, but here's one for families: They've just debuted Le Jardin de Lila, their kids club offering sports in the gardens, Arabic lessons, and treasure hunts in the hotel's Medina. (Sorry, you can't participate if you're older than ten.)

Where We've Been

TEXAS
Attending the Original Round Top Antiques Fair has been a dream of mine for a few years now, so I jumped at the chance to go with General Motors when they invited me down to Texas to try out the newest model of the Chevrolet Equinox. From Austin, I made the one-hour drive to Rancho Pillow, a kooky 20-acre compound in the tiny town of Round Top, which is flush with cows and bluebonnets. I spent the following day trolling the goods on display at The Big Red Barn before heading back to Austin for a whirlwind 24-hour visit, where I tried to see and do as much as I could. Having a car to navigate the city was key. I was able to squeeze in a lot, including an overnight at the hip South Congress Hotel, a delicious lunch of Vietnamese pho at Elizabeth Street Cafe, and a stop at Ellsworth Kelly's highly Instagrammable Temple for Light. – Berit, senior editor

QATAR
Have you been to Qatar? I hadn't, and was curious what to expect, given that Qatar Airways is promoting the country as a stopover destinaion en route to its eastern Africa and Asia destinations. I spent four days there in March, before the temperatures get too hot to handle, and, wow, did I pack it in. We went dune bashing in the desert en route to the Inland Sea. Saw the excellent permanent collections at the stunning Museum of Islamic Art, Ai Wei Wei's Laundromat exhibit at the Fire Station, and well-conceived displays at the four fascinating Msheireb Museums, a new development that will soon have a lovelt Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which I previewed. I got a feel for the Arabian equestrian obsession touring the stables at Al Shaqab and watching the races at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club. I was draped in a burqua to visit Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque, but otherwise wandered freely around Souq Waqif and the absolutely stunning Rem Koolhaas-designed Qatar National Library. Qatar is opening itself to the world through sports (World Cup 2022) and culture. It's not as go-go as Dubai, and that's a very good thing. — Pavia, CEO

SAN FRANCISCO
I just returned from my first proper visit to San Francisco. (A stop en route to Napa doesn’t count.) I had heard conflicting reports from friends who had been, but I loved it. The weather was perfect, which made walking around the Mission, up Bernal Heights Park, down to the Dogpatch, through Hayes Valley, along Chrissy Fields to the Golden Gate Bridge, and back to my room at the newly renovated Hotel Kabuki a breeze. All that strolling was essential considering how much I ate. Highlights included small bites and sake after a hot soak at Onsen; a feast of rabbit, pig head, and abalone at The Progress; an incredibly fresh brunch at the Ferry Building’s best kept secret, Boulettes Larder; and being one of the first diners to experience the luxurious tasting menu from Atelier Cren alum Rodney Wages at Avery. – Daniel, editor

GEORGIA
It's not easy for Americans to reach Georgia (the country!), one of our picks for the top 10 places to visit in 2018, but that makes it all the more interesting. I was expecting a real Russian vibe on my recent 10-day trip to the republic, but the food, wine, hospitality, people, and landscape reminded me more of the Mediterranean. But that's glossing over it too much, as the place is wholly unique: Georgians have their own alphabet and language, an incredible polyphonic singing tradition, and an 8,000-year-old natural wine-making practice. With access to Eastern Europe and the Black Sea, the Caucasus Mountains and Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Western Asia, there's a lot of cultural mixing and matching. And barely an American in sight — yet. (So get in on the ground level.) Your best bet is to begin in Tbilisi, the capital city that's having a bit of a cultural moment (continental creatives are calling it "the next Berlin"), where you should absolutely stay at one of three places: Fabrika (the super cool Brooklyn-in-Eurasia hostel complex), Rooms (the chic boutique hotel), or the soon-to-open Stamba (for the bold, beautiful, and bourgeois), all run by the incredibly savvy and globally inspired Adjara Group. – Jeralyn, editorial director

AUSTRALIA
While Jeralyn was in Georgia, I was in South Australia attending the Australian Tourism Exchange travel show. While there, I visited Kangaroo Island (it's a real place! with kangaroos and wallabies and sea lions and koalas!). There are beaches galore, as well as a natural phenomenon called the Remarkable Rocks which really is remarkable. I stayed at Southern Ocean Lodge — also worth a few superlatives for beauty, serenity, drama, and scenery. The travel show itself was in Adelaide, where highlights included the Botanic Gardens, the Adelaide Biennial Divided Worlds, and my hotel, Mayfair. This area is famous for its wines, and I was happy to have dinner with the owners and winemakers and taste the freshest vintages at Bird in Hand winery and to attend a party at the funky, kooky, art-filled d'Arenberg Cube. Every time I'm in Australia I come away with the same thought: Why don't we all live there? — Pavia

WASHINGTON, D.C.
I flew to Washington D.C. for a few days with friends and family. Man, this town is pretty come spring. Daffodils, tulips, magnolias, and the famous cherry blossoms, best seen along the Tidal Basin, were in full bloom. Translation: Hotels were packed. I found a nice room at The Darcy, a cool downtown boutique with a mead bar and a serious seafood restaurant from Hilton’s Curio Collection, but could not pass up the chance to peek into The Line in Adams Morgan. Housed in a former historic church, the hotel is beautiful and full of lively communal spaces. Spend time here if you can: Dinner at the wood-burning restaurant A Rake’s Progress is a must. So is a meal at Fabio Trabbochi’s new Spanish spot Del Mar in the new Wharf waterfront district (save room for the seafood paella). The National Museum of African American History and Culture was a powerful and eye-opening experience, and deserves not one but a few visits. – Daniel, editor

Where We've Been

AUSTRALIA
My family is still reeling from jet lag after summer vacation in Sydney, Australia (pure joy to experience in the middle of a windy NYC winter). Pretty much everything lived up to the hype. We got a hot tip to stay in North Bondi, which is excellent for families looking for easy access to the amazing kiddie ocean pool and the more locally inhabited cafes and bars. Breakfast blew my mind every morning — favorites included The Nine, Shuk, and Harry’s. I’ve been looking forward to Sean’s Panorama since this story appeared on Fathom seven years ago. And I had a lovely radio chat about all things travel with the @katiemayors on her Bondi Beach Radio show, in a tiny studio perched on a hill overlooking the beach at sundown. - Jeralyn, editorial director

SOUTHEAST ASIA
I’m fresh off a two-week stint in Southeast Asia and am already thinking about a return visit. I started my trip in Singapore, where I stayed at the new Andre Fu-designed Andaz Singapore and toured the The Warehouse Hotel. Both were fantastic. From there I boarded Silversea’s elegant Silver Shadow and made my way to Ho Chi Minh City, where I took $1 Uber rides (really), slurped pho at Propaganda, and bought an obscene amount of modern Vietnamese ceramics at Sadec District. My next port of call was Chan May, which I quickly departed for Hoi An, a highly Instagramable and well-preserved ancient town with the most charming tea parlor. My final stop in Vietnam was Ha Long Bay, where I hiked to the top of Bai Tho Mountain and kayaked amongst the towering limestone pillars. I ended my trip in Hong Kong at The Upper House, where I had the best meal of the trip at Cafe Grey Deluxe. - Berit, senior editor

MONTREAL
I can't believe it took me so long to get to Montreal. The city is a food-lover's paradise and is brimming with things to do, even in the dead of winter. I went over Presidents' Day weekend and stayed at the stylish Hotel William Grey in Old Montreal. That hotel gets so many things right, from the espresso they serve in first-floor cafe and the marble pool table in the lobby living room to my incredible corner room, which had huge tub with a view over the Old Port. Other highlights: a sensual dinner at Foxy, cheese-stuffed Russian pancakes at Arthurs Nosh Bar, drinks at Atwater Cocktail Club, a smoked meat pilgrimage to my namesake Schwartz's. I'll back in the summer to enjoy outdoor drinks during terrasse season, and this time, I'll fly. Taking the overnight bus from NYC was a nightmare. – Daniel, editor

NAPA/SONOMA/SAN FRANCISCO
Has anyone been at FathomHQ this month? We've all been on the road. I was just in San Francisco, where I checked into super cool Proper Hotel, ate at Rich Table, and drank champagne at Leo's Oyster Bar, one of many fun joints owned by Anna Weinberg, who is easily the coolest woman on the West Coast. I was in the Bay Area because I was speaking at the Professional Wine Writers Symposium at Meadowood Napa Valley, where I sipped and swirled with very impressive wine experts. While there, I traveled around Napa and Sonoma extensively to see how the region was recovering from the devastating fires from last fall. In a word, fully. Everybody, go to Napa and Sonoma! Now! I saw so many wonderful things, which you'll be reading about on Fathom soon or can watch me gush about in this Facebook video. In a very quick nutshell, my highlights included Napa and the charming Archer Hotel, the nicest place to stay in town. A too-brief visit to perfect, perfect Las Alcobas Napa Valley in St. Helena, where my room overlooked a beautiful vineyard. The hotel, the first United States outpost of Fathom Favorite Las Alcobas in Mexico City, is home to Chris Cosentino's terrific restaurant Acacia House and a very restorative Atrio Spa. A super informative wine tasting at Round Pond Estate, where sommelier Scott Tracy gave me a crash course in Napa viticulture. That I got to spend three nights at Meadowood, the resort for which superlatives aren't enough, means I owe someone a lot of karma points — and not only because I was invited to taste an outrageous 2009 red at Promontory Wines, one of the three wineries owned by Meadowood's Bill Harlan and run by his lovely son, Will. That I followed that up with a night at the Auberge Resort Calistoga Ranch means I'll never repay the karmic debt I now owe the universe. That I then went to charming Healdsburg, spent the night at Hotel Les Mars, and had dinner at the temple that is Single Thread means that I should just give up traveling right now because it might not ever get any better. — Pavia, CEO

JAMAICA
Okay, that's not all I did. A week after California, I went to Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, Jamaica, and am happy to report that it's even better than I knew it would be. We've covered it on Fathom many times, and, well, what can I say? There's nothing that can't be cured with a few days spent jumping off cliffs, eating ackee and salt fish, dancing to reggae, snorkeling with those cute little fishies, and watching the big red sun set into tomorrow. — Pavia

Hotel Intel

The Rockhouse team is about to unveil Skylark, a new hotel on Seven Mile Beach in Negril. They transformed a drab hotel along a somewhat down-heel stretch into a 28-room Miami Art Deco-inspired hotel that is keeping prices low and style high. Miss Lily's, their terrific NYC restaurant, will be providing the beachfront food and fun.

Four Seasons Punta Mita just unveiled The Container, a club for 13-19 year-olds with a strict No Adults Allowed policy. Programming includes movies, video games (kids, get off the box and get outside!!), ping pong, beach volleyball, and hikes. Our first thought: Where was this when we were 15? Our next thought: Let's hope this is a sign of things to come.

Next month marks the opening of Six Senses' first city property, Six Senses Duxton, in Singapore's eclectic Chinatown neighborhood. Located in a row of trading houses that have been sustainably restored under designer Anoushka Hempel, the 49-room hotel will have a traditional Chinese doctor offering readings, health recommendations, and a medicinal herbal dispensary.

We have our eye on Majorca's super cute Hotel Mama. An explosion of pastel pinks, blues, and greens pretty much guarantee that the new 32-room hotel will be an Instagram hit come summer.

Mexico is welcoming its first Aman, named Amanvari, in 2020. The tranquil escape on the East Cape of the Baja Peninsula is being described by insiders as a beachy version of Utah's Amangiri.

Where We've Been

Earlier this month, I toured the Roman and Williams-designed Freehand New York, a 395-room boutique hotel housed in New York City’s former George Washington Hotel. The abundant plant situation on the second floor lobby is not to be missed, nor are the two restaurants by restaurateur Gabriel Stulman of Joseph Leonard and Bar Sardine. Rooms start as low as $129 per night through spring, which feels like a steal for New York City. – Berit, senior editor

We compiled a list of the Most Romantic Hotels of 2018, the knockouts, gorgeous retreats, and hideaways that will make you stop in your tracks.

Sugar Beach, the Viceroy luxury resort in Saint Lucia (and a Fathom Favorite), has debuted Beachfront Collection, two stunning new four-bedroom villas to its offerings. If you really love them, you can even buy them.

Inspired by the philosophy of “less, but better,” the studio behind Ace Hotels is launching a new brand called Sister City. The first outpost, a 200-room hotel, will open this fall in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Just 90 minutes north of Melbourne, in the Victorian countryside near Nagambie, the Mitchelton Winery Estate has added an elegant 58-room boutique hotel called The Mitchelton Hotel and Spa.

Come May, travelers to New York City will be able to sleep under the stars with a stunning view of both the Statue of Liberty and the iconic New York Skyline at the newest outpost of Collective Retreats on Governors Island.

Trips to Book

London: Feeling impromptu? Go to London this weekend to see it become the other city of lights for Lumiere, the UK's Largest Light Festival. In honor of the show right outside its doors, The Beaumont, one of Fathom founder Pavia's favorites, is offering a £382 per night rate.

Colorado: Wishing you had booked a ski getaway? There's still time. Auberge Resorts is offering a fourth night free at Hotel Jerome in Aspen, a fourth or fifth night free at their newest resort, Madeline Hotel & Residences in Telluride, and a complimentary upgrade on three, four, or five-bedroom residences at Element 52 in Telluride.

Dolomites, Italy: The Ranch Malibu's famous wellness and fitness program is taking their show on the road this summer with six weekly sessions at the famed Hotel Rosa Alpina from August 19 - September 29.

South Africa: Experience the best of Africa with The Royal Portfolio's The Royal Itinerary package, a ten-night affair showcasing the country's varied terrain and four of its most prestigious hotels, including luxury safari lodge Royal Malewane and design hotel The Silo. From $9,245 per person sharing.

Hudson Valley, NY: Mohonk Mountain House, a grand Victorian hotel, has all kinds of fun winter getaway weekend promotions (ballroom dancing, jazz on the mountain), but we have our eye on the March 22-25 knitting weekend. Making a cozy sweater by an even cozier fire? We're in.

Where We've Been

Over the holidays, I finally got a chance to visit a few of the charming upstate New York towns we’re always covering on Fathom. Thanks to a killer deal on Hotel Tonight, I spent two days at Hasbrouck House, a cozy 18th-century Dutch Colonial mansion-turned-B&B with a farm-to-table restaurant. Highlights of my trip included all-day-breakfast spot Hash, a snowy walk to the uber photogenic Saugerties Lighthouse, and drinks at natural wine bar Brunette. - Berit, senior editor

I also went upstate over New Year’s to Troutbeck, the newly revamped resort that we covered last month. I loved it — the roaring fires in the common areas, our cozy suite (#6) with the bathtub on a sunlit patio, the terrific restaurant (have the lobster soup!), and the rich cultural history the attentive team is rightfully proud to share (in our room: a framed letter from Martin Luther King, Jr.). I can’t wait to see how they grow and continue the humanist tradition. - Pavia, CEO

I spent the last few weeks of 2017 in paradise. First leg: Sydney, where we split six beach days between Tamarama and Avalon north of the city. (Swimming, sunbathing, smoothies, and dinners in Surrey Hills were the norm.) Then we went to Singapore, where I ate chicken rice more than thrice and stayed in the hip Tiong Bahru neighborhood. To cap it all off, we spent three days in buzzy Hanoi. The highlight: A street food tour and drinking past the 12:30 a.m. curfew in a bar that had shut its front gate to avoid getting in hot water with patrolling cops. - Daniel, editor

Spending New Year's weekend in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, was cool and chill — even with our gang of little kids in tow. The high-altitude town is colorful, crafty, and festive; there are outdoor markets, horse-riding charros, and just enough New World touches (i.e.: cortados, bone broth) to keep one from going on chips-and-guac overload. I found wonderful Mexican home goods at Mixta, cosmic cow skulls at Evoke the Spirit, and wildly delicious handmade honey chocolate at Mente Cacao. My toddler came back with fiesta garland for her bedroom and a newfound love of mariachi music. - Jeralyn, editorial director
