After Fashion Week, Designers Take Off

When Fashion Week ends, everyone needs a break. Especially designers. Where do Cynthia, Rebecca, Jessie, Waris, Jeffrey, and the gang go to kick back?

I would like to plan a trip to Montauk to recover from a super busy summer. Our market ends the end of next week, not to mention the High Holidays thrown in the middle there (which resembles something to the likes of the dinner scene out of Annie Hall), so there is still a stretch to go. But Montauk is so quiet and sleepy off-season, it really feels very far away.

My dream trip is a road trip from Paris to West Africa. I read about it years ago on a Lonely Planet blog. Ever since it's stuck with me as the ultimate road trip. You drive through the South of France, down to Spain, take a ferry to Morocco, drive through the Sahara (intense, and you need a gun for bandits), and end up in West Africa.
The trip sounds beautiful, elegant, dangerous, strenuous, hot, dry, and colorful.
discovery of inspiration. Cheesy but true.

Fiji. Every October, as our Fashion Week recovery, we have a week-long family holiday on a tiny atoll nestled amongst Fiji's outlying islands. I'm counting the days.

I want to go to Turkey for my next vacation. I went to Istanbul about ten years ago, and it still is one of my top three favorite cities. I really want to go again and explore more — the markets, the food, just wandering around the city. And then I want to go explore the Roman ruins around the country. I went to Ephesus and Pergamon last time I was in Turkey, but I have always wanted to go also to Aphrodisias, another site further inland.
At the end, I want to take a week and go to a Greek island off the coast to really relax. Last summer I went to Santorini, but I would like to go someplace a little more secluded this time. I have heard that Symi is amazing and very close to Turkey.
cafes. I spend a lot of time in Italy but I am always at the factory working. Every morning I stare longingly at the numerous cafes on my way to the train to go to the factory, wishing I could just spend the day just sitting at one of them. So when I am traveling and not working, I always love to spend hours sitting at the cafes wherever I am just reading and watching the people around me (and eating whatever amazing food I can find).

I want to go to Asia. I really want to go to Korea with my new friend Hye Park to talk about our collaboration and travel with a native person around Seoul. I always love being with someone who knows the place well to find the spots out of tourists' way. Then, in my dreams, I want to go to Bali with my family. A few people I know have been there recently and it just seems like the place I'd like to go and chill out completely.
work and family. This summer alone I've been back and forth from Los Angeles to Colorado, Istanbul, Minnesota, France, Italy and St. Louis! In that order.

We just booked a trip to Round Hill in Jamaica. I am looking forward to relaxation time by the pool and our own private villa. My dream vacation though is Paris with my boys in tow. Maybe next summer.

Dear Fathom, there's no rest for the wicked. Right after Fashion Week I go to Istanbul to set up for my first exhibit in Turkey. It will be held at Istanbul 74 in October.

I am leaving for Paris right after Fashion Week. I lived there for many years, and I love to go back right at the close of one season and the beginning of another to kind of cleanse my creative palette and seek out new inspiration. I feel very at home there, but I am also very inspired by the energy of the city, so it is a perfect place for me to wind down from one collection and gear up for the next — all at the same time. I can't wait!

I've never been the shopping-trip-to-Paris type. The more exotic, far-flung, and unexplored, the better. Just like Pee Wee, I love a big adventure. So every opportunity I get, I go as far as possible. Places on my imminent hit list include Bhutan, Kenya, and Galapagos — or any good surf spots. Right after the show, I've booked Typhoon Lagoon at Disney World with a bunch of friends for a private night of surfing. The following week, I'm going to Tokyo to celebrate the ten year anniversary of my clothing brand and to introduce our art site, Exhibition A.

Directly after sales is over in late October, we are headed to Provincetown to celebrate Halloween! We both love Halloween, and every year a bunch of our close friends gather there for the annual Spookybear festivities. The food is amazing, and there really is nothing as magical as New England seaside towns in the fall, as shops close, tourists leave, and the streets are filled with locals. There is a quiet there you can't beat.

NEW YORK CITY – Fashion Week is, as ever, frenzied and exciting and very, very exhausting. Designers spend countless hours working on their collections, and the fashion show is over in about ten minutes. Talk about adrenaline rush. Talk about needing a break.
So we asked some of our favorite designers: Where do you want to go to recover from Fashion Week?
Not surprisingly, beautiful, inspiring, and it's-okay-to-chill-and-do-nothing places ranked high on their lists.
