Eat, Drink, Caffeinate, and Shop Like a Boss in San Francisco's North Beach

If you really want to get to know the best of a great neighborhood, ask a great local. In this case ,the neighborhood is North Beach, San Francisco's Little Italy, and the local is Ryan Pollnow, the charming pizzaiolo behind Flour + Water Pizzeria, whose Little Black Book of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and boutiques will make you want to go west right now. (If you can't do that but are impatient to get your hands on one of his pies, you can order pizza to be delivered.)
While I grew up in Northern California and have spent most of my adult life in San Francisco, it was only after opening Flour + Water Pizzeria with my co-chef Thomas McNaughton in 2023 that I came to appreciate how cool the North Beach neighborhood is for locals and for visitors. We opened the pizzeria (and its companion, Flour + Water Pizza Shop) in the space that formerly housed the North Beach dining institution Rose Pistola, a restaurant known for its contributions to the community and the city’s Italian culinary scene. Because I’m constantly going back and forth between our restaurants in the Mission District and North Beach, I’ve gotten to know the neighborhood with a totally fresh perspective. There’s a mix of businesses that have been around forever (like Cafe Trieste, where Francis Ford Coppola is said to have started writing The Godfather on a napkin, and Vesuvio, a favorite haunt of legendary beatniks Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg) and newer spots run by friendly folks looking to make their mark on this quintessential SF neighborhood. North Beach is so much more than just our Little Italy — it’s an amalgamation of cultural experiences that you could spend days exploring and only scratch the surface.
Restaurants — Both New + Institutions
Sotto Mare
The classic Italian seafood spot housed in a building that dates back to 1919 is home to the self-proclaimed “world’s best damn crab cioppino.” Easily one of the biggest bowls, comfortably serving two, it’s a must for any first-time visitors to SF.
Tony's
No explanation needed. Our North Beach neighbor is the pizza institution I head to when I want different style options. Grandma, Sicilian — you name it, they’ve perfected it. If you’re looking for tavern style, head to their other spot, Capo’s, just down the street.
Hilda & Jesse
A relatively new addition to North Beach, Hilda & Jesse will make you rethink everything you know about traditional brunch. (I’m looking at you, breakfast tasting menu.) Either way, don’t miss the pancakes or Grade School Breakfast (French toast sticks).
Freddie's Sandwiches
A classic build-your-own-sandwich deli, where it’s all about the details, like the perfectly shredded iceberg lettuce.
Sam’s
618 Broadway; +1-415-391-1539
THE most satisfying late-night burger spot that was visited by Bourdain way back when. The no-frills burgers are perfect, and I’ve gotta give an honorable mention to the onion rings.
Ebiko
Our new next-door neighbor has quickly become a regular weekday lunch for me on the days when I’m working from our pizzeria. They offer super fresh, high-quality grab-and-go rolls and even have to-go nigiri omakase.
Butter & Crumble
Since opening in 2023, Butter & Crumble has been driving long lines for their exceptional pastries. My go-to is Dulce Pain Suisse, but the menu changes monthly. They share their latest drops on their IG and provide live updates about line length and which items are still in stock, so you know before you go.
Bars
Tony Nik's
Big Cheers vibes. The owner, Sebastian, makes everyone feel like family.
Bodega
Since opening in 2016, Bodega has been bringing a new wave of natural wine party vibes to old school North Beach. It’s hard to find a time of day when this place isn’t packed to the gills. Bonus: They serve breakfast burritos on the weekends.
The Saloon
The oldest bar in SF also has some of the cheapest drinks.
Specs
Where else can you order endless gin & tonics accompanied by a fat piece of gouda and saltines? This is comfort drinking at its best.
Vesuvio
The upstairs table directly above the front door is the best seat in the house for people watching down Columbus Avenue. This is a place you go to feel like you’re in old-school SF.
Golden Sardine
Another new spot for natural wine, tinned fish, and live poetry readings. (Welcome to 2026!) Unlike most natural wine bars, you’ll find a mix of all ages and plenty of legendary North Beach characters bellied up at the bar.

Coffee
Compton’s
This place is super consistent, pouring a quality cup every time. But the part I love most about Compton's is how every barista seems genuinely happy and excited to be there.
Caffe Trieste
One of my favorite stops for a double shot of espresso when I have a few extra minutes to sit down on my way into work. It’s an old-school, no-BS spot where you’ll find a cast of characters meeting up for their morning espresso, pastry, and good old-fashioned neighborhood gossip.
HITW Coffee
Just as the name Hole in the Wall suggests, this coffee shop is literally 27 square feet with a walk-up window. It’s not just about coffee, though: They serve whole coconuts for those days when you just need multiple bevvies side by side.
Beacon Coffee
A solid coffee shop with a retail section filled with items from local makers.
Shops
AB Fits
An expertly-curated clothing and shoe store that’s been around for 30 years. This is where I go to learn about new brands you can’t find anywhere else.
Al’s Attire
Legendary spot for custom footwear. They even keep a mold of your foot on file for future visits.
Vacation
A solid vintage shop with an insane inventory. They’ve got graphic tees and vintage Levi’s galore, plus a ton of hyper local items you won’t find anywhere else.
Little Vine
This place takes the cake for F&B shoppy shops. While it seems like everyone is stocking the same retail food items, I always find something new when I stop in. They host winemakers for weekly tastings that spill onto Grant Avenue each Thursday.
Friend of a Friend
A great new bottle shop from Chris Renfro of 280 Project, a local legend who advocates for a more equitable and inclusive wine industry.
Jeffrey’s
The best pet shop in San Francisco, in my humble opinion. They’ve got another location near our other restaurants in the Mission.
