ILLINOIS
Longman & Eagle
Chicago, IL
What's to Love: The hippest restaurant and inn with Michelin-star food. Design junkies lust for the custom rooms. Notable too for the constant rotation of rock star artists like The Post Family and Cody Hudson.
Good to Know: Earplugs are your friends -- you are above a bar, after all. If you're looking for a weekend stay, book far in advance: It's the definition of popular.
MICHIGAN
Honor & Folly
Detroit, MI
What's to Love: In a city not known for romance, a quirky two-room inn created by the founder of Designtripper in the center of Corktown, a hot little Detroit neighborhood. (They also own the infamous Slows BarBQ.) Many pieces in the gorgeous rooms are for sale.
Good to Know: Run downstairs to Astro Coffee for a flat white, egg sandwiches, and a thick slice of chocolate hazelnut cake, and have breakfast in bed.
WISCONSIN
Canoe Bay
Chetek, WI
What's to Love: It's an escape to nature, but with fine dining, lush linens, and a night sky full of stars that feels like it's your own.
Good to Know: There are no phones in the rooms or villas and cell service is spotty. In other words, heaven.
Wandawega Lake Resort
Where: Elkhorn, WI
What's to Love: A Prohibition-era summer camp turned artist retreat with every camp activity from canoeing to archery. A favorite with muscisians, artists, and adventurer types.
Good to Know: If you book a teepee, boy scout cabin, or the three-story treehouse, bring extra batteries for your flashlight.
