The Scene: An outdoor gathering with friends and family during summer months.
The Meal: Hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, ice cold beers. In the Southern states pulled or shredded pork is popular.

Head to the great American South.
The Scene: Laid back potluck-type event in a backyard with family and friends. In South Africa the men typically braai while women prepare the rest of the meal.
The Meal: Sausage, kebabs, chicken, pork, and steak are cooked on a wood-burning fire. The main side dish is a traditional porridge called pap. It has a similar texture to polenta. Fish and rock lobster are popular in coastal regions.
The Scene: Popular in the countryside and earmarked for special occasions or honored guests.
The Meal: Lamb or goat stewed with potatoes, carrots, and cabbage inside a container with hot stones and water. Wash your hands, as you'll be eating with them.
The Scene: Restaurant with tables that have grills built into their centers.
The Meal: Raw beef, pork, and chicken marinated in soy-based sauce, served to guests who grill the meat themselves. Side dishes include kimchi, cooked soybean sprouts, and spinach.
The Scene: Australia's version of a casual summer hang.
The Meal: Burgers, chook (chicken), prawns (shrimp), and sausage (grilled on white bread with onions and tomato sauce) sizzles. Side items include coleslaw, fresh salads, and plenty of beer.
The Scene: Barbecue sites abound in public parks and alongside beaches throughout Hong Kong. Groups gather around the fire and cook their own food on skewers.
The Meal: Chicken, burgers, and pork marinated in honey and soy sauce. Typical sides include foil-wrapped pieces of corn and sweet potatoes.
The Scene: Meat on the grill may as well be the national hobby of Argentina. Asado refers to both the grilling style and the large slabs of meat cooked on the parrilla.
The Meal: Enormous cuts of salted beef (or lamb or pork) accompanied by chimichurri sauce or salsa.

The Scene: A local specialty on the northern island of Hokkaido. Often served around an outdoor grill during cherry blossom season.
The Meal: Thinly sliced mutton and vegetables served with a sauce made by adding fruit and wine to a soy sauce base.
Summer means many things around the world, but a few things are constant. Beaches and swimming. Long days and lazy nights. And, of course, barbecue. Every culture around the world enjoys grilling meats and gathering around a glowing fire. (Go, caveman brain!) In celebration of the American July 4th holiday, we're taking a global tour and following the smoke signals around the world.
The Scene: Lechón is the Filipino national dish, the centerpiece for every celebration, from birthdays to baptisms to weddings.
The Meal: A whole pig slowly roasted on a spit over hot coals.
