Fathom Favorites : Singapore Restaurants

1. Ah Chew Desserts

Ah Chew Desserts

A traditional Chinese dessert spot. Chinese desserts are typically in soup form, made from steamed egg, milk, nut pastes, starches, or jelly, with sweet or savory toppings — but less adventurous eaters can opt for ice cream. For more traditional Chinese desserts, also check out Gong He Guan.

2. Tiong Bahru Market

Tiong Bahru Market

On a weekend morning, hit the big wet market downstairs to see how locals get their groceries. (Greet the uncles and aunties behind the stalls with a smile and they might just give you a discount!) Then head to the hawker center upstairs for chwee kueh (steamed rice cake), pau (steamed buns), and the “see no sunlight” char siew wanton noodle.

3. $1 Ice Cream Sandwiches

$1 Ice Cream Sandwiches

Get a $1 ice-cream sandwich (which is really $1.20/$1.50 now, but will still always be referred to as “one dollar ice cream”) from the aunties and uncles along Orchard Road, Singapore’s main shopping thoroughfare. Pick your flavor and your ‘sandwich’— our favorite combo is the raspberry ripple with wafers. This is also where you’ll find Singapore’s famous rainbow bread, which makes for a great (and Instagram-worthy) ice cream sandwich option, too.
