I travel for the Thrill

Fathom Questionnaire: Berit Baugher

by Berit Baugher

Hometown: New York City by way of Greenwich, CT.

Occupation: Assitant editor at Fathom.

Favorite destinations: The South of France, the Dalmatian Coast, and Copenhagen.

Dying to visit: Montenegro, Bhutan, Vietnam, and Istanbul.

Bizarre travel rituals: Obsessively researching my destination beforehand and compiling an extensive list of restaurants, stores, hotels, and activities that might interest me while I'm there.

In-flight relaxation regime: Bottle of Evian, stack of new magazines, and a good playlist on my iPod.

Always in carry-on: Everything I packed for the trip — after a few lost bags and missing items I prefer to keep my stuff close. I also like to travel light. I end up wearing th same three outfits the whole trip anyway.

Concierge or DIY? A little bit of both. Preference is DIY, but the concierge can be really helpful if you don't speak the language. They can also provide great suggestions that you won't find in travel guides.

See it all or take it easy? It depends on the type of trip and who I'm with, but for the most part I try to see and do as much as I can. I'm always scared I won't be back and it's my one shot. This mentality works for me — I end up being much more adventurous than normal.

Drive or be driven? Drive. I like to be sporadic and make unexpected stops along the way.

Travel hero: My mom, a former PanAm flight attendant. She's been everywhere and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Weirdest thing seen on travels: An Italian farmer wielding a machete and inviting my friends and I to his farm for a viewing of his newborn bunnies. We followed. The bunnies were very cute.

Best hotel amenity: Free breakfast or WiFi. It's the little things that count for me.

I dream about my meal at La Spoda, the restaurant at Le Sirenuse in Positano. Best chicken ever, accompanied by an amazing view.

Everywhere I go, I check out the local grocery stores and pharmacies. I love seeing the different products and packaging that each country has. I have a major sweet tooth, so I also make it a priority to find one or two good pastry shops.

When I arrive in a new place, I learn the lay of the land by having previously plotted all my points of interest on a Google Map dedicated to that destination. It helps me to see everything spread out on a map. Then I can wing it and wander with a general idea of what might interest me in each area.

I always bring home chocolate, lots of photographs, a T-shirt for my boyfriend, and ideas for my next trip.

If I never return to rural Pennsylvania it'll be too soon because the last time I was there my car broke down in the middle of nowhere and we had to spend the night in a motel straight out of a horror movie.

I travel for the thrill. Nothing beats stepping out of your everyday life to experience something new.
