Happy Birthday, National Parks!

For 96, they look pretty fresh. And green! Very, very green. From sea to shining sea — in nearly 400 national parks — the United States National Park Service cares for 84 million acres of beloved landscapes, treasured memorials, and irreplaceable ecosystems. Happy 96th birthday to all 20,000 of you!

If you can't head out into the great wide open, do some armchair travel to mark the occasion. Here's a quick tour:

1. Glacier National Park, Montana

Sit back in one of the rockers in the main lobby and crack open the paper in front of the perennially blazing fireplace, which is the size of a small dance floor.

2. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Photographer Robert Christian Malmberg heads for the mountains with a handmade darkroom trailer in tow. Literally.

3. Yellowstone Montana

Unheated, with only a lantern as electricity, each cabin came equipped a vintage wood stove, playing cards, and a canister of salt.

4. Yosemite, California

An incredibly vivid time-lapse video of Yosemite National Park gains traction on the web. And a report back from the High Sierras.
