Fathom summer intern Richa Shah shares her visual must-eat list of Indian street foods.
INDIA – My annual trip to India consists of catching up with family, sweating a little too much, and eating lots of good food. Street food is by far my favorite, basically a class unto itself, and, as a vegetarian, it's particularly awesome. I rounded-up a list of my favorites.
Makai
A street corner specialty roasted and topped with a delicious mix of Indian spices and lemon.
Pav Bhaji
For a quick, street-side lunch, spicy vegetable curry is served with a soft bread roll.
Ice Gola
The best way to cool off? With flavorful shaved ice.
Bhel
A spicy and savory snack of puffed rice, veggies, and tamarind found on every street corner.
Masala Chai
Grab a cup to start your morning off right. Getting another later in the day wouldn't be so bad either...
Idli
These warm cream-of-rice pancakes paired with a cup of masala chai make for a great breakfast.
Samosa
An Indian classic of vegetables and lentils packed and fried in a triangular pocket.
Jalebi
A deep-fried Indian delicacy of flour and saffron that gets people hooked on the very first bite.
Keri
When the season is right, these are perfectly sweet and juicy.
Nariyal Pani
Cool, vitamin-packed refreshments.
Panipuri
Take a few minutes out of your day for this one: a hollow puri filled with chutney, chaat masala (a mixture of indian spices), potatoes, chickpeas, chili, and a mixture of flavored water.
Yell "kama masala" if you can't feel your lips after you've eaten a few.
Batata Vada
A potato fritter served with both sweet and spicy chutney.
Papad
This paper-thin snack can be eaten plain or spiced with tomatoes, cilantro, onions, lemon, and chili powder.
